With 2022 drawing to an end, we finished off the year with Quiz and Karaoke/Domino's night evening...  ... with the King of the Macarena and some interesting but passionately delivered vocal displays.

Mr Karting, 13 Dec 2022

Image
Cadets did their best to lay down rubber with a few spins on our super cool "ice karting" trip. It was proper karting, not so easy with the ice and slightly colder than planned, but the cadets did their best to lay down rubber with a few spins. Cadets also got to dress up as Ninja Turtles, what's not to like? We will return! (in the summer)

More Duke of Edinburgh Award certificates arrive, Dec 10

Image
Well done to Cdt R, Cpl M and (now) Sgt M on getting their Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards approved and verified on Dec 10, to add to our 2022 haul. The Air Training Corps is the largest operator of the The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities for young people aged 14-25. At Bronze and Silver level their are 4 sections, Physical, Skills, Volunteering and Expedition and they need to complete all 4 to get the Award. Cadets can start Bronze in the school year in which they turn 14 years old which is usually when they start Year 9.

Lions Food Parcels community service, Sun 11 Dec

Image
Well done to the 14 cadets and 4 staff that helped with the Warwick Lion's on Sunday (This is the Lion's annual 'Robin Hood' moment where they collect food from the community from those who want to give it, and then distribute it to those that need it). Your efforts were really appreciated by the Lions and you demonstrated the positive role young people can play in community. Even got a photo with the Warwick Mayor.

17 Basic Swimming Competence Test successes today

Image
Well done to the 17 or so cadets that achieved their Basic Swim test today. Bravo. That means you can partake in 1368 Kayaking mayhem, should you wish. BASIC SWIMMING COMPETENCE CERTIFICATE FOR AIR CADETS To qualify for this certificate personnel are required to demonstrate Swimming Competence as follows: Swim 50 metres without rest, using any recognised single swimming stroke Remain afloat for 2 minutes in a restricted area of water, with a maximum radius of 2 metres Exit the pool at a point where the candidate is out of depth without an aid. However, in locations where there is a considerable distance between the water and poolside, as found in some service pools, some assistance may be given at the examiner’s discretion. All elements of the demonstration are to be performed consecutively in the order shown above, in standard swimwear. Next up would be intermediate and advanced: INTERMEDIATE SWIMMING COMPETENCE CERTIFICATE FOR AIR CADETS To qualify for this certificate personnel are

Super cool Ice Skating, 7 Dec

Image
Cadets from 1368 descended on Planet Ice, Coventry for a get into Christmas-mood social night. It was nice night for all the ages to mix and have fun. So impressed how supportive our cadets are with one another. That said, the team's final technique of dragging Cpl M into the middle and forcing him to make his way back seemed a bit extreme, it did seem to work and loved the giant Conga attempt at the end. Main thing is that everyone had fun.

Wing Commander visit, 30 Nov

Image
The outgoing Wing Commander came to visit us on Nov 30, 2022. The cadet's wish him well and presented him with a surprise “10 years as OCW Warwickshire and Birmingham” mug they'd created with pictures of him handing us the wing cross country and wing athletics best squadron awards (2022).

The University of Life (and Oxford)...

Image
Last parade night took an academic slant. Classification training lectures are now back underway with cadets doing First Class workbooks, completion of the first Leading subject, and the Senior/Master cadets constructing card games on Aircraft Systems during the evening. Evening finished off with one of our ex Senior NCO's who's a bit clever but still very fun, doing a visitor talk on his life after cadets with a focus on what university is, how you apply, and some interesting anecdotes about his Oxbridge application process.  “If you aim higher than you expect, you could reach higher than you dreamed.” ~ Richard Branson

1368 Air Cadets land helicopter next to Sqn building...

Image
... well, sort of. What actually happened is that cadets has a "synthetic flying training" day out at RAF Tern Hill hosted by 632 Volunteer Gliding School (VGS) on Nov 26. Dubbed operation ‘Get Flying Wings’, it was a great success with a hoard of Blue flying wings and certificates. No real aircraft but cadets were tutored through flying a glider and completed their synthetic simulator tests, visited a control tower, and got to play around in the cadet room, including landing a helicopter next to a new design of the 1368 Sqn building. Great cadet day out with a nice mix of cadets from across the board. "Blue Badge Wings" is part of the Air Cadet progressive training syllabus. The Blue Aviation Training Package (Blue ATP) introduces cadets to aeronautical concepts including the primary and further effects of controls, lift vectors and airfield procedures. There are 4 elements to the training: Cadet Aviation Familiarisation Course (FAM) Ground school Part Task Traine
